FIRST DEAF INDIVIDUAL TO SUMMIT ALL 50 UNITED STATES HIGH POINTS
On June 13, 2021 Scott Lehmann became the first deaf individual to summit all 50 United States High Points (the tallest point in each state). It took him nine years to complete the project.
In 2012, Scott went on a cross-country trip with friends Kevin Berrigan and Bobby Siebert, both also deaf. Inspired by the mountain ranges of the American west, the three decided to climb Wheeler’s Peak, the tallest peak in New Mexico. The quite inexperienced group found the challenges invigorating, and it became Scott’s first high point in the United States. Over the next nine years, Scott traveled over 10,000 miles across the United States to climb the highest point in each state. Along the way, this mission became a collective effort as his parents, sister, Shayna, and friends joined him in climbing some of the high points with him. On June 13, 2021, Scott finally completed this mission with the summit of Denali, becoming the 342nd person in the world and the first Deaf individual to reach all 50 high points in the United States.
